Shiv (Shivadarshan Lal) Chopra was born in India and studied veterinary sciences there. Around 1960 he moved to Canada and earned a Ph.D. in microbiology at McGill University in 1964. He worked in England for a few years prior to returning to Canada where he began to work with Health Canada as a drug evaluator in 1969. In the early 1990s, Chopra was involved in a systemic racial discrimination case in the Canadian public service, and in the late 1990s was one of three whistleblowers who expressed concern about several veterinary drugs. In addition to scholarly papers and a memoir, Chopa published plays, verse drama and poems in Canada. Dr. Chopra died in January 2018 at the age of 84.
