What is badging?
TMU Libraries’ workshop participants are now able to collect digital skills badges endorsed by the Library. Once awarded, these open badges provide learners with transferable proof of their achievements / skills gained for workshops that they have participated in.
Why is the library offering badging?
Badges are meant to recognize that you’ve developed a particular skill or concept through a specific library workshop.
Why should I get a badge?
Your hard work outside of the classroom deserves to be recognized. TMU Libraries Badges gives you an opportunity to seek out activities, develop skills, and have them recorded. It also provides the opportunity for you to link the competencies gained from your experiences to skills that employers and graduate schools look for.
How do I know if a workshop is badged?
Badged workshops will have a Badge image on the workshop description, similar to one shown below. You can also check to see if a workshop you are interested in is listed on our badging page.
What do I need to do to earn a badge? When and how will I receive my badge?
Once you have completed an eligible Library workshop, your workshop facilitator will email you instructions on how to accept your badge. This usually takes place within one week of your workshop.
To be considered for a badge, applicants will complete a brief self-reflection or reflective activity that is assessed by the workshop facilitator. After the reflection has been assessed, the badge earner will be issued a badge through the CanCred platform. Applicants will receive emails at each step in the application process.
Am I required to apply for a badge in order to access a specific library service?
Badges are entirely optional! While some Libraries’ services require mandatory safety training (E.g., laser-cutting at the DME lab) and may feature badges as form of recognition, you are not required to apply for and/or exhibit your badge.
Will my badge expire?
Your “open badge” is designed to be transferable and will not expire. In some situations that involve equipment safety training, your access to TMU Libraries equipment may expire if you do not complete a refresher workshop. However, you will still retain your original badge from the workshop you attended.
How can I display the badges and skills I have earned if I don’t have LinkedIn?
TMU Libraries makes use of Open Badges issued through the CanCred platform. By design, open badges are platform agnostic. Your badge travels with you and you can choose to display it on any platform of your choosing, such as LinkedIn. Moreover, learners can choose to store their badges in an eCampus passport. passport.
Is this the same as Level Up? (or any other campus badging programs)
Several groups on campus offer badges. Each area of the university has unique programming, and you are welcome to collect and display badges from all university groups or units. Badges or microcredentials from each group are different, and represent the development of different skills. TMU Libraries’ badges are endorsed by TMU Libraries’ and are distinct from other units on campus who may be offering their own programming. Check out some of the others too: Level Up, Curv – Chang School, Business Career Hub – TRSM.
How many badges can I earn?
There is no limit to how many badges you can collect. See the list of badges available through TMU libraries.
Can I use my badge towards a credit or course?
At TMU, Libraries’ skills badges do not have a course credit attached to them. Libraries’ badges are a co-curricular complement to your course experience.
