Laptop Lending Policy

All laptop users are expected to abide by the University’s Computer Use Policy, and the Library Code of Conduct

Liability

The user agrees to assume any and all legal liability for the cost of repair or replacement in the event of loss due to theft, damage, negligence or misuse. The Library will not assume responsibility for lost files due to viruses, hardware failure and network interruptions. Any file(s) copied or downloaded will be automatically removed and cannot be recovered after reboot/restart.

Eligibility

All Toronto Metropolitan University students, both part-time and full-time, Faculty, Staff, and Continuing Education students with a valid library card may borrow a laptop.  Users must also be in good standing with the Library, i.e. no outstanding fines or liabilities over $20. The Library requires this information to help prevent laptop theft.

Students, Faculty, and Staff with a TMU OneCard will be asked to verify their identity with a piece of government-issued photo ID with their name and address, e.g., driver’s license, OR, a utility bill, e.g., phone bill, with their library card.

Continuing Education students without a TMU OneCard will be asked to verify their identity with a piece of government-issued photo ID with their name and address, e.g., driver’s license, AND/OR a utility bill, e.g., phone bill, with their library card. In addition, proof of their student status will be required, e.g., fees statement, enrolment form.

Limits

Eligible patrons are permitted to borrow one laptop at a time. Patrons with a laptop (term loan) checked out cannot borrow a laptop (short-term loan) at the same time.

Availability

Laptops are available for loan on a first-come, first-served basis at the Circulation Desk. Loan Period: The loan period for laptops is eight hours. Laptops may be borrowed for use outside of the Library, but may not be signed out on an overnight basis. Laptops are due thirty minutes prior to the Library’s closing time.

Laptop Agreement Form

When first-time users sign out a laptop, they will be required to read and sign a “Toronto Metropolitan University Library Laptop Agreement form.” The form will be kept on file for future reference as required.

Renewals

Laptops may be borrowed for up to eight hours at a time. At the end of the loan period, the patron must bring the laptop back to the Circulation Desk in person.  Patrons will be permitted to re-check out the same laptop (a maximum of one time) if there are no other patrons waiting for a laptop.  Patrons will have to inquire with circulation staff.

Advance Booking

Holds or advance bookings are not available.

Fines

Overdue fines of $20 per hour (or each part thereof, with a $500 maximum) will commence at the due time. In other words, fines for a full hour apply even when the laptop is less than one hour late. Borrowing privileges will also be suspended for late return.

Replacement and Damage Fines

The user assumes full financial responsibility. The replacement charge for a laptop is $1,500, in addition to a processing charge of $20. Charges for missing laptop accessories also apply – $50 for carrying case; $65 for AC-adaptor plus the cost of nine cell batteries, and overdue fines.  The suspension of borrowing privileges will also apply. A repair fee will be levied for damaged laptops. Any laptop equipment malfunctions should be reported immediately to Library staff.

Returns

Laptop computers must be returned in-person to staff at the Circulation Desk. Users will be required to wait momentarily so staff can verify that all laptop accessories have been returned.
