Donations Policy

The TMU University Library welcomes gifts in kind that meet our acceptance guidelines; however, due to space constraints and processing costs, we accept very few donations. The Library does consider offers of unique or rare books, personal papers and collections. Please see Archives & Special Collections information for Potential Donors or email librarydonations@torontomu.ca for more information about the donations process.

We do not accept donations of used books and/or textbooks. The following are organizations that may be suitable for donations of used books:

Textbooks for Change
Toronto Public Library
Better World Books

Donations of collections valued at less than $1,000 may be appraised by experienced library staff. In accordance with Canada Revenue Agency guidelines, TMU University requires collections valued at more than $1,000 to be assessed by an expert independent appraiser.

If the donation is accepted, the donor is required to sign a Gift In Kind Donation Agreement that will be supplied by the Library.

The Library will accept only unconditional donations. We reserve the right to retain or dispose of donated material according to the needs of the University. Once offered and accepted, donations become the property of the Library and cannot be returned to the donor.

All donations must be in accordance with the university’s Coordination of Donation Appeals and Gift Acceptance Policy.

The Library welcomes gifts of books written by TMU faculty, which can be sent directly to the Archives:  asc@torontomu.ca or 416-979-5000, ext. 557027.

Contact Director of Development, Joanna Beyersbergen, 416-979-5084 or jbeyersb@torontomu.ca for information about cash donations to the Library or the Archives and Special Collections.
