GIS Day 2014 – Celebrate with us!

GIS Day at Ryerson

19 November 2014, 1pm-5pm, LIB489

We welcome Ryerson students, faculty, and staff, and the local community to a celebration of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) research and applications on this year’s global GIS Day.
The event takes place on the 4^th floor of the Toronto Metropolitan University Library & Archives, 350 Victoria Street, Toronto.

Keynote presentations (approx. half an hour each):

2:30pm Harvey Low – Manager, Social Policy Analysis & Research, City of Toronto

New Geospatial, Map and Data Centre Website

Our staff in the Geospatial, Map and Data Centre have been busy developing a new and improved website! Please take some time to familiarize yourself with the new format and content, which was strongly influenced by user feedback. The new site has been organized to provide easier access to our three major collections: Geospatial Data & GIS resources, our Paper Map Inventory, and the Statistics & Data resources available through the Library. We encourage you to provide feedback about the new site through this blog, or visit us in the GMDC, located on the main floor of the Library, at the north end! We hope to see you soon.

Report on Direct Borrowing from U of T Libraries

The following report provides details about Ryerson’s usage of the direct borrowing agreement with the University of Toronto Libraries (UTL). This agreement allows Ryerson faculty, staff and graduate students to borrow directly from UTL Libraries. The report includes statistics such as the number of borrowers, usage by department, and some analysis of borrowed titles.

To See and Be Seen: T-shirts from the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives

Presented on the occasion of WorldPride 2014 in Toronto, To See and Be Seen features t-shirts from the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives (CLGA) from the 1970s onwards, representing the fight for visibility and recognition of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (LGBTQ) communities. These t-shirts, from organizations such as ACT UP, Queer Nation and local LGBTQ Pride events, demonstrate a range of messages from expressions of identity, political and social struggles, to the celebration of community, love and pride.

Guest curated by Professor Joseph Medaglia from Ryerson’s School of Fashion, this exhibition is produced in collaboration with the CLGA, the Toronto Metropolitan University Library and Archives (RULA) and is supported by the Textile Museum of Canada and the School of Fashion.

Phyllis Yaffe Library Innovation Student Scholar

We’re pleased to announce the creation of the Phyllis Yaffe Library Innovation Student Scholar for 2014-15. This position honours the contributions of Phyllis Yaffe, a former librarian, who will soon complete her term as the university’s Board Chair. Funded by the Provost’s Office, a one-year, part-time internship has been created for a third or fourth year student to work closely with the Library and Information Technology Services (LITS) team and other library units to enhance digital literacy at Ryerson, and engage in innovative initiatives related to e-learning and zone learning.

Students are invited to bring their own versatile, creative and entrepreneurial strategies to the position. Recent student employees in LITS have been involved in web application development and mobile app development such as Ryerson Mobile and the RULA MAPS app.

We look forward to the contributions of the Phyllis Yaffe Library Innovation Student Scholar in the coming academic year, and thank both Ms. Yaffe and the Provost for their support of this initiative.

Ryerson, we need your help! Vote online to support your favourite items for inclusion in a time capsule, which will be buried in the steps to the Student Learning Centre, set to open in 2015. You can also suggest an item for the time capsule which you feel best represents the history of Ryerson, or the current student experience. We’re excited to hear from the community, so vote now!

2014 Student Employee of the Year Award Winners

On April 15th, Ryerson Library hosted the annual Student Staff Appreciation Party. This celebration honours the Student Employee of the Year Award recipients. The Student Employee of the Year Award recognises students who have achieved excellence in their work environment, and the winners receive an award as well as a cash gift. The selection committee had a difficult time selecting just one recipient this year, and ultimately recognized two Ryerson students: Romana Naz and Sarah Hubbard pictured below with RULA’s chief librarian, Madeleine Lefebvre. This event also recognized graduating student employees including Hanny Sierra, who is the first recipient of the Emerging Professional Award offered by the Career Centre, and the first Experiential Learning Work Study Program Award. Congratulations to the award recipients, and we wish you the best of luck in the future!
