Summary of Host Department:The TMU Libraries Digital Media Experience (“DME”) Lab is a digital media makerspace open to all members of the TMU community. Users come to the Lab to access studio space, high end Adobe CC software workstations, virtual reality equipment, fabrication technology (3D printing, laser cutting, vinyl cutting), microcontrollers, and more. Regardless of a patron’s technical background, DME staff support creators through on-on-one training, group workshops, and themed maker hangouts. Access to the DME space and resources are provided to current TMU students at no charge.
 
Job Description:Based in the TMU Libraries Digital Media Experience Lab (“DME”), the successful candidate will work as part of a team, providing technology welcome desk support to TMU Libraries patrons as they learn and create using emerging technologies. This user-facing role has a specific focus on supporting DME fabrication equipment (i.e., 3D printers, laser cutters,…), design software, and media creation space.

This staff member will be a critical first point of contact for all creators accessing the DME lab space. The successful candidate will have access to exceptional learning experiences that include:

Learning to maintain and operate DME equipment, including fabrication technology.
– Early access to emerging technology, including guided setup and troubleshooting.
– Opportunities to train student peers under the supervision of the DME Manager.
– Opportunities to assist DME advisors in the design and development of DME projects (workshops, lab betterment projects, installations,…).

Under the supervision and guidance of the Digital Media Experience Manager, this student role will:
– Welcome all DME patrons at the Lab’s central help desk, communicate with patrons directly via the DME email address.
– Assist the DME Technician and other DME part-time staff in the maintenance and operation of DME 3D Printers and other fabrication equipment (Cricut machines, embroidery machines, laser cutters,…).
– Serve as a 3D design resource for TMU students, help support the DME’s sustainable 3D printing workflow.
– Assist in the processing fabrication files for 3D printing, laser cutting, vinyl cutting, and others.
– Follow procedures and standards related to in-lab fabrication.
– Assist in the organization of formal workshops and informal peer tutoring sessions.
– Assist in student engagement initiatives (orientation week programming, tours of the DME space, external collaborations,…).
Technical Knowledge / Skills RequirementsNon-technical skills required for this role include:
– Exceptional scheduling skills required to navigate a fast-paced library service area with multiple active projects.
– Exceptional customer service skills.
– The ability to communicate technical information (DME lab policies, equipment specifications,…) in clear and concise terms.
– Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
– The ability to collaborate with coworkers.
– An awareness of DME lab users’ technical and project-related needs.
– An appreciation for digital literacy.

Technical skills needed include:
– Google Apps (Google Docs, Google Sheets).
Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive file management.
– Experience with Adobe CC suite tools, Fabrication Technology, and Creative Coding.
