The Isaac Olowolafe Jr. Digital Media Experience Lab is a library learning space open to all TMU creators. At the DME, students, staff, and faculty create content using new and emerging creative technologies. The DME operates as a peer-led experiential learning space designed to support library creators learn through doing.
Visiting the Lab
The DME Lab is a spacious, accessible library space located in SLC 308. Most of our services are offered on a drop-in basis, but 3D Printing and Laser Cutting need a booking outside of morning walk-in hours.
New! Lower sensory creative hours with reduced distractions are posted to our weekly schedule.
Service Highlights
- The DME Lab offers beginner-friendly, peer-led daily workshops open to all TMU students and library users, regardless of discipline or project type.
- With staff support, users operate all equipment themselves.
- All DME equipment is free to access after training, if required. The Lab does not charge usage fees or machine time.
- Consumables are provided at no cost during workshops. Library users receive up to 9 hours of 3D printer filament time per week.
- Outside of workshops, users may bring their own compatible materials and, with staff assistance, load them into DME equipment. A limited selection of commonly requested consumables is also available for purchase via OneCard.
- We welcome drop-ins! Even if you do not yet have a project in mind, drop by for a tour and leave with fresh ideas and a small 3D-printed takeaway.
Course Collaborations
Are you a TMU faculty member looking to integrate creative technology into your course? We offer two formats that you can request by emailing jloney@torontomu.ca:
- Small format, hands-on workshops for groups of up to 8 learners inside our SLC 308 lab space.
- Larger format in-class presentations led by our staff technology training specialist.
We would be pleased to meet with you and review your creative technology needs. At your request, we can also suggest a list of lending program equipment resources relevant to your course learning outcomes.
The DME lab is one of many Libraries resources offered at TMU.
New! “Hack Stack” Book Collection
Are you looking to explore Making concepts or starter project ideas at the Lab? The DME Lab has its very own “Hack Stack” book collection that staff can sign out to you when you visit SLC 308.
Collaborations with Student Groups
As a Library resource, the DME offers event space options for student groups interested in running creator-oriented events. Please submit all event proposals 2-3 weeks before your event date.
