Copyright & Teaching

At Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), faculty have three options for making course materials available to their students and for ensuring those materials have the correct copyright permissions.

Whichever option you choose, don’t put yourself or the university at risk. Copyright infringement is a real concern; make sure you’ve got the proper copyright permissions.

Option one: Electronic

Use the Library’s E-Reserve Service

Does copyright give you a headache? Then go electronic and use the Library E-Reserve copyright checking service. It will leave you more time to prepare your course materials and less time worrying about copyright. Chang School instructors please use this method exclusively.

Option two: Print

Order print reserve items via the Library. The Campus Store no longer processes new print course packs. If you order print course packs containing copyrighted materials only use vendors covered under an Access Copyright licence.

Option three: Do-It-Yourself Copyright Checking

Check copyright permissions yourself for material that you make available to students either as a handout or on D2L  Brightspace. Please note that you will need to follow a copyright checking process to use this method.
