This grant has been developed to support clinical faculty, and collaborators in the creation, adaptation, and adoption of open educational resources. OER are learning materials that are openly licensed such that they are freely available to be adapted, copied, and shared. OER can be: courses, modules, textbooks, multimedia, assessments, and supplementary materials. By transitioning from costly commercial textbooks to open access materials, this program aims to reduce financial barriers for medical learners while allowing instructors to customize content to specific clinical curriculums and local patient populations. This grant advances the University’s priorities to foster an innovation ecosystem and builds on TMU Libraries’ digital initiatives, expertise in Open Access and Open Education Resource publishing and dissemination and academic priorities of access and openness.

This pilot year, we are offering funding across two distinct categories to encourage both traditional text-based scholarship and innovative multimedia learning.

Grant Categories

Category 1: Open Textbook & Adaptation Grant

Award Amount: Up to $7,500

Objective: To fund the creation of a new open medical textbook or the significant adaptation of an existing open textbook.

Scope of Projects:

Creation: Authoring a comprehensive resource where no adequate open alternative exists (e.g., “A Learners Guide to Emergency Medicine”).

Adaptation: Revising an existing open medical textbook to align with the specific curriculum, updating clinical guidelines, or adding local case studies and imagery.

Revision through Open Pedagogy: Updating resources and content through student interaction with the resource and/or assignment design that makes updating course material as part of the curriculum.

Deliverables:

A complete open textbook or substantial guide hosted on the Toronto Metropolitan University libraries open platform (e.g., Pressbooks) that is in accordance with accessibility guidelines to all students.

All content must be licensed under a Creative Commons license (e.g., CC-BY or CC-BY-NC) unless otherwise agreed upon in advance.
