{"id":758,"date":"2023-03-01T15:56:06","date_gmt":"2023-03-01T15:56:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/library.torontomu.ca\/publishing\/?page_id=758"},"modified":"2025-06-19T23:41:13","modified_gmt":"2025-06-19T23:41:13","slug":"2023grants","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/library.torontomu.ca\/publishing\/grants\/2023grants\/","title":{"rendered":"2023 Toronto Metropolitan University Libraries OER Grants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The TMU Libraries are pleased to announce their <\/span><b>2023 Toronto Metropolitan University Libraries Open Educational Resources (OER) Grants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to encourage the creation and adoption of open educational resources. OER are learning materials that are openly licensed such that they are freely available to be adapted, copied, and shared. OER can be courses, modules, textbooks, multimedia, assessments, and supplementary materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These grants advance the University\u2019s priorities to foster an innovation ecosystem, ensure excellence in student learning experiences, and build on TMU Libraries digital initiatives, expertise in Open Access and Open Education Resource publishing and dissemination, and academic priorities of access and openness. TMU Libraries are very pleased to collaborate with the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching and the Chang School of Continuing Education in the review and adjudication of the grants and the support of successful projects. A total of $30,000 is available in two categories of grants:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Category 1 \u2013 Creation or Adaptation of an OER Textbook<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2 grants, maximum $10,000 each, to create a new open textbook or adapt an already existing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/openlibrary.ecampusontario.ca\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Open Textbook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (significantly adapting existing content and including additional ancillary materials). For examples of University-created OER textbooks, see the list of books on the TMU Libraries<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/library.torontomu.ca\/publishing\/home\/books\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">publishing site<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Category 2 \u2013 Creation of Openly Licensed Immersive Content<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2 grants, maximum $5,000 each, to<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> create open immersive content. To meet the demand for the creation and viewing of immersive content, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">TMU Libraries<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has launched a new Immersion Studio. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">TMU Libraries<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Immersion Studio, a full 360\u00b0 space that is 6 meters in diameter and 2.3 meters tall, is a resource for faculty and students to develop learning and teaching materials using collaborative virtual reality (VR) experiences and immersive media.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Objectives of the Grant Program<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To support faculty members in the creation, review, revision and adoption of open textbooks and other OER materials.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To increase the use of open educational content at the University resulting in pedagogical innovation, enhanced access for students, and reduced textbook and class material costs.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Eligibility<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All TFA and CUPE Faculty members, Librarians and Post-Doctoral fellows may apply for these grants.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Evaluation Criteria<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All proposals must result in openly licensed resources and will be evaluated on the following criteria:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Impact on student success and experience, including high-quality materials, maximum access, open and innovative pedagogy, and cost savings to students.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Active engagement of students with Faculty in the adaptation\/adoption of OER.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Expansion of discipline\/subject OER coverage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Completeness and viability of budget and project outcomes, consistent with project objectives and appropriate administrative approval from your Chair or supervisor as necessary.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Commitment to building equity, community and inclusion, advancing the TRC Calls to Action, recommendations of the Mash Koh Wee Kah Pooh Win (Standing Strong) Taskforce, and alignment with Toronto Metropolitan University\u2019s Academic Plan and priorities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>\u00a0Guidelines for Applicants<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Complete the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSfXens4PYDZYE4jrsbzpJDm1JXW74XoOzLqb9A72NrhUUqWXw\/viewform?usp=sf_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Application Form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by 4:00 pm on May 30, 2023. Proposals must be submitted via this link prior to the deadline.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Selection Process: Proposals will be evaluated according to an established assessment rubric based on the criteria noted above. A University Library OER Grant Review Committee with representatives from TMU Libraries(chair), the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, and the Chang School will consider all applications.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Funds will be available once a detailed budget is approved by the TMU University Libraries OER Grant Review Committee.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Funds may be used to pay students; editors; graphic designers; videographers, with preference given to projects that employ Toronto Metropolitan University students. Funds cannot be used to purchase equipment or used for travel costs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is not an equipment fund, however, if the substance of the project requires equipment, that component may be considered if it is demonstrated that such equipment is unavailable on campus and is instrumental to the project on a case-by-case approved basis. The TMU Libraries can make equipment for 360 filming projects available. Please note also that TMU Libraries hosts Pressbooks, a collaborative open textbook publishing platform.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Faculty teaching releases are not funded by this grant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Funds will be made available no later than July 1, 2023 after recipients attend an introductory 2-hour onboarding session. Grant funds must be expended by August 31, 2024. Brief final reports at project completion and\/or close of the granting period are required, including an outline of fund expenditures. Any unspent funds will be returned to the TMU Libraries.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Reporting and Deliverables<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>For Category 1 \u2013 Creation and Adaptation grants:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A mid-term check-in meeting will occur by Dec 15, 2023 and final reports and links to materials created must be submitted to the TMU Libraries OER Grant Review Committee by August 31, 2023. Upon completion of the project, a presentation must be made during Open Education Week Open Access Week or the University Faculty Conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Acknowledgments\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Grant recipients are required to credit the <\/span><b>Toronto Metropolitan University Libraries Open Educational Resources (OER) Grants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in any publications, conference proceedings, or media appearances resulting from the funded project.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Licensing<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All materials created for the <\/span><b>Category 1 Creation and Adaptation Grants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and<\/span><b> Category 2 Creation of Open Immersive Content<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> must be licensed under a Creative Commons CC-BY license, or a CC-BY-NC license and indicate that they were funded by a <\/span><b>Toronto Metropolitan University Libraries Open Educational Resources (OER) Grant<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Please note that any 3rd party content must be consistent with these licences, or have copyright permissions cleared. Any interviews must be properly released using appropriate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.torontomu.ca\/content\/dam\/brand\/global\/downloads\/forms\/image-consent-form-general-2021.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">video and testimonial release forms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Working with or interviewing Indigenous communities or community members or using Indigenous knowledge and\/or data in your project, consideration of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fnigc.ca\/ocap-training\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The First Nations Principles of OCAP\u00ae <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and respect for how and what Indigenous knowledge can be reused and shared is very important. Alternative licences may be considered for projects with Indigenous content, interviews and testimonials.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Assessment<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Groups may be interviewed at the end of the project for feedback and a follow-up interview will be done after in-classroom pilots.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Application Process<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To apply for a grant, please submit a completed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSfXens4PYDZYE4jrsbzpJDm1JXW74XoOzLqb9A72NrhUUqWXw\/viewform?usp=sf_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">application form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by 4 pm May 30, 2023.
