DME Lab 3D Printing Services have been improved! For beginners, we now offer several drop-in times<\/a> where staff assist first-time users in trying out the printers for brief, 20-minute prints. During these blocks, staff will help you print out eligible items and provide information on how to register for our more hands-on self-serve 3D printer training. Returning users are reminded that they must complete the refreshed 3D Printing Certification Training in D2L and the quiz (online and in-person)<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Digital Media Experience Lab provides 3D printing access to all TMU students and employees at no cost.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Lab offers two no-cost 3D printing services to TMU Libraries users:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. Staff-Assisted Printing<\/strong> – Ideal for beginners or occasional users who need to 3D print simple objects. This service operates on Prusa MK3\/4S Printers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Self-Serve Printing<\/strong> – Perfect for anyone who wishes to modify settings or 3D print multiple objects. This services is run on high speed Bambu Labs printers. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Option 1: Staff<\/strong>-Assisted 3D Printing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    If you are a beginner looking to try out 3D printing, drop by the lab weekdays from 10-11:30am and try out 3D printing on our new Prusa Printers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We’ll offer you a menu of 3D models that you’ll be able to select from. Then, with our friendly training staff, you’ll print one out on newly purchased Prusa MK4S equipment. Current models include: fidget spinners, a mini SLC building, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If you’d like to continue 3D printing on your own, let us know during the drop in and we’ll set you up with access to the Lab’s self-service Bambu or Prusa 3D printer training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

    Option 2: Self-Service 3D Printing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    The DME has 5x Bambu A1 printers<\/a> (PLA-only) and 1x Bambu X1 Carbon<\/a> (PLA and bring-your-own approved filament only).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    After training, you can use a single printer for up to 2.5 hours \u2013 perfect for iterating through multiple prototypes or even prints with multiple parts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Pass <\/strong>the self-guided 3D Printing knowledge training + knowledge quiz<\/a> (online, self-paced).<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Book <\/strong>an in-person 3D printing equipment test before<\/em> printing. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Apply <\/strong>for your optional LinkedIn \/ open badge<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n\n\n

      Notes: Users must adhere to all TMU Libraries<\/a> and University policies. You must be present at the lab for the duration of your print and you will need to check in with a staff member before all prints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      3D Printing<\/b> FAQs<\/h3>\n

      How long does my 3D printer certification last for? <\/b>Our 3D printer submission systems have been configured to verify that you have completed a DME 3D printing workshop before<\/em> you can book a print. Generally speaking, certifications are valid for one academic year after they have been completed. If in doubt, please check in with dme-advising@torontomu.ca or sign up for a workshop through our website.<\/p>\n

      How much does it cost to print at the DME?<\/b> Library users are not charged fees to print at the DME. As long as you fall within the the guidelines below, the TMU Libraries will subsidize PLA filament costs for lab users.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      How long can I print for?<\/b> Printing time varies based on the printer that you are requesting. Staff-assisted prints on the Prusa\u00a0 printers are limited to 6 hours per print \/ 9 hours printing time per week<\/strong>. Our self-service printers (Bambu Labs A1 model) are limited to 2.5 hours per print \/ 6 hours printing time per week<\/strong>. The Lab\u2019s Bambu X1 Carbon \u2013 our bring your own filament printer \u2013 is limited to 3 hours per print \/ 4 hours maximum per week. Overnight prints are considered on a case-by-case basis for coursework and final year projects.<\/span><\/p>\n

      How long will my print take? <\/b>This depends on many factors. However, you will learn how to get a print time estimate by following the training in our D2L course shell. Your total print time cannot exceed your booking slot.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

      What am I allowed to print? <\/b>You can print anything you would like, with the exception of <\/span>drug paraphernalia, weapons (of any kind), <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>items flagged as offensive by Library staff.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

      Do I have to stay for the entire booking slot?<\/b> You only need to stay for the first 20 minutes of your print on the Prusa printers. If you are printing on a self-serve Bambu model printer, please be prepared to stay for your entire booking slot.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Can I choose the colour? <\/b>Filament colours include white, black, grey and alternating colours. However, the availability of a specific colour is not guaranteed. Check in with a DME advisor to see what colours are available before you book a print at the DME.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Can I bring my own filament? <\/b>The DME provides PLA or PLA+ filaments, generally in either black or white.\u00a0 If you have project-specific needs and want to provide your own filament, please consult a staff member.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Are there any exceptions to the time limit? <\/b>Overnight prints are available to coursework. Please speak to a full-time staff member if you’d like to review this option.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Can I print multiple items at the same time? <\/b>Yes, but ensure that you\u2019ve completed an intermediate training session and have reviewed your print with an advisor. You will be responsible for watching your print at all times. We highly advise using the “print by object” model.<\/span><\/p>\n

      What happens if I miss my 3D printing booking? <\/b>If you are more than 15 minutes late for your booking, your booking will automatically be cancelled and the time will become available to another student to book. Please help us maximize access to this popular service by canceling your booking if you know you cannot make it.<\/span><\/p>\n
