{"id":1337,"date":"2020-03-14T18:57:51","date_gmt":"2020-03-14T22:57:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/library.ryerson.ca\/copyright\/?page_id=1337"},"modified":"2025-06-26T12:14:54","modified_gmt":"2025-06-26T16:14:54","slug":"quick-copyright-tips-for-rapidly-shifting-your-course-from-in-person-to-online","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/library.torontomu.ca\/copyright\/faculty\/quick-copyright-tips-for-rapidly-shifting-your-course-from-in-person-to-online\/","title":{"rendered":"Copyright Tips for Shifting Your Course From In-person to Online\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>There may be pedagogical and technical issues that make the shift from in-person to online teaching a challenge but for once, copyright is not a significant additional area of worry!<\/div>\n<h2><b>Overall points to keep in mind<\/b><\/h2>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Most of the intellectual property issues are the same in both contexts.<\/li>\n<li>If it was okay to do in class, it is often okay to do online \u2013\u00a0<i>especially<\/i>\u00a0when your online access is limited to the same enrolled students.<\/li>\n<li>You can continue to use the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/library.torontomu.ca\/copyright\/policies-guidelines\/fair-dealing-guideline\/\">TMU Fair Dealing Guidelines<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Copyright and Digital Delivery Tips<\/h2>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Use university password-protected systems like D2L Brightspace to make material available to your students, and use Ryecast, D2L Brightspace or TMU\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.torontomu.ca\/digital-media-projects\/tools\/zoom\/\">Zoom<\/a>\u00a0to deliver lectures with copyrighted content.<\/li>\n<li>You can post your in-class slides to D2L Brightspace. Slides provided by textbook publishers are almost always okay to use via their Terms of Use.<\/li>\n<li>Course readings rules for print and online posting are similar. Either use\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/library.torontomu.ca\/copyright\/policies-guidelines\/fair-dealing-guideline\/\">TMU Fair Dealing Guidelines<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/library.torontomu.ca\/copyright\/faculty\/teaching\/do-it-yourself-copyright-checking\/uaing-library-resources-in-teaching\/\">Library licenced content<\/a>, or link out to Internet content.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/library.torontomu.ca\/services\/reserve\/faculty\/ereserve\/\">Library E-Reserve<\/a>\u00a0can help you copyright check readings, create links to ebooks and journal articles and more.<\/li>\n<li>Your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/library.torontomu.ca\/info\/contactus\/subject-liaison-librarians\/\">Subject Librarian<\/a>\u00a0may be able to find alternative content, for example\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/library.torontomu.ca\/\">TMU Library<\/a>\u00a0has a large collection of online journals and many e-books that can support online learning. Your librarian can also help you find copyright free teaching materials like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/learn.library.torontomu.ca\/OER\/course\">Open Educational Resources (OER)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Use phone apps like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.thegrizzlylabs.geniusscan.free&amp;hl=en_CA\">Genius Scan<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.adobe.scan.android&amp;hl=en_CA\">Adobe Scan<\/a>\u00a0to easily scan print materials you want to post to D2L Brightspace within the limits allowed by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/library.torontomu.ca\/copyright\/policies-guidelines\/fair-dealing-guideline\/\">TMU Fair Dealing Guidelines<\/a>. Make scanned PDF files more accessible for your students by using the TMU Library provided <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.library.torontomu.ca\/ocr\/\">optical character recognition (OCR) online tool<\/a> to convert \u201cnon-selectable\u201d text files into more accessible versions.<\/li>\n<li>A more tricky aspect of online sharing can be around sharing audiovisual material like films and audio files in a digital format. But remember you can still link to legally posted online content (from YouTube etc.).
