Deen studied psychology in university. She is a respected and prolific writer for children and young adults and now lives in Edmonton. Deen was the inaugural 2013 Regional Writer in Residence for the Metro Edmonton Library Federation. Several of the books that Deen wrote for an adult audience are only available in electronic formats.
