Asoka Weerasinghe was born in Sri Lanka. He lived in England for a dozen years prior to relocating to Canada in 1968. In 1970 Weerasinghe completed an M.Sc. degree at Memorial University in St. John’s, NL where his thesis was entitled: Stratigraphy and palaeontology of the Ordovician Long Point formation, Port au Port Peninsula, Newfoundland. His poem “Trail of Mankind” was adopted as the storyline for Canada’s National Museum of Man’s Orientation Hall in Ottawa in 1972. A resident of Ottawa, Ontario, Weerasinghe co-founded the Gloucester Spoken Art poetry and storytelling series. This work earned him the City of Ottawa Distinguished Civic Award for 2003 in the field of Arts and Culture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n
