Abla Farhoud was born in Lebanon and immigrated to Canada with her family in the early 1950s. She worked as an actress in Quebec, Lebanon and France before turning her attention to playwriting in 1982. She writes in French, and sadly, few of her plays have been translated into English. Most of her published novels also remain untranslated. Farhoud completed an M.A. in theatre arts from the Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al in 1985. Her thesis was eventually published as her play Les filles du 5-10-15\u00a2<\/span><\/em>.\u00a0 In addition to plays and novels, Farhoud has written radio scripts, monologues and short stories.<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

With one side in Mile End and the other in Outremont, Hutchison Street is inhabited by characters from many different backgrounds, including a community of Hasidim and a writer whose newest project is a novel about the people she has lived among for thirty-nine years. She traces the life stories of an aging singer, a bag-lady who feeds birds in a back alley, an Italian widow who grows tomatoes in her front yard, a Jamaican woman who longs to dance the night away, and a young Hasidic girl who keeps a diary.<\/p>\n

A moving account of isolated individuals attempting to reach out to one another in one of Montreal\u2019s most diverse neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n
