Nanci Lee\u2019s debut explores 4th Century Su Hui\u2019s palindrome of longing. Hsin<\/em> arises from an ancient Chinese ethical philosophy, less a set of moral standards than an appeal to tune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heart-mind<\/em> and nothingness<\/em> are fair English translations of Hsin<\/em>, but their tidiness risks losing some of the sharper, wider sides of absence and appetite. As a historical process, according to Hang Thaddeus T\u2019ui-Chieh, Hsin<\/em> frustrates, \u201cthe psychological fragmentation and compartmentalization of the West.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
