Let&#8217;s look back at these names and how they reflect the evolution of our University and its community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1948-1963<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>Ryerson Institute of Technology <\/strong>(RIT)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1961, founding principal, Howard Kerr, wrote that he chose the name \u2018Ryerson\u2019 for the new post-secondary school, because the Egerton Ryerson statue stood on-site (since 1889).&nbsp; For example, engineering students graduated as full accredited engineers rather than as technicians. --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 360\/174;\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_caption gallery-caption\">2015-2022 RU logo<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><a class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-prev swiper-button-prev swiper-button-white\" role=\"button\"><\/a><a class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-next swiper-button-next swiper-button-white\" role=\"button\"><\/a><a aria-label=\"Pause Slideshow\" class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_button-pause\" role=\"button\"><\/a><div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow_pagination swiper-pagination swiper-pagination-white\"><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2022 and Beyond<\/strong> \u2013 <strong>Toronto Metropolitan University<\/strong> (TMU)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Fall of 2020 President Mohamed Lachemi established the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryerson.ca\/standing-strong-task-force\/\">Mash Koh Wee Kah Pooh Win (Standing Strong) Task Force<\/a> to gain a comprehensive understanding of both Egerton Ryerson\u2019s life and legacy and the role of commemoration in our community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><em>Over the course of nine months, the Task Force oversaw an in-depth historical research project, a 2-month community engagement period and learned from Traditional Knowledge Keepers and various subject matter experts about the life and legacy of Egerton Ryerson, statues as forms of public art and memorialization, the history of colonization, Traditional Knowledge of Indigenous Peoples and place-making, the naming of public spaces, the Indian Residential School System, the public education system, segregated and separate schooling, Truth and Reconciliation, and the uses of commemoration.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p><cite>Mash Koh Wee Kah Pooh Win (Standing Strong) Task Force \/ website https:\/\/www.ryerson.ca\/standing-strong-task-force\/about\/<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Task Force produced a <a href=\"https:\/\/library.torontomu.ca\/asc\/files\/SSTF-report-and-recommendations-Aug_24_FINAL.pdf\">final report<\/a> with 22 recommendations addressing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Principles of Commemoration at the University<\/li><li>Commemoration of Egerton Ryerson<\/li><li>Responsibility to Educate<\/li><li>Advancement and Support of Indigenous and Black Scholarship<\/li><li>Use of Public Space<\/li><li>Acknowledgement of the Land<\/li><li>Fulfillment of Previous Commitments<\/li><li>Implementation of the recommendations<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p> The University&#8217;s Board of Governors accepted the implementation of the 22 recommendations including #4 &#8220;The University rename the Institution in a process that engages with community members and University stakeholders&#8221;.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September of 2021 an Advisory Committee on University Renaming was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryerson.ca\/news-events\/news\/2021\/09\/president-lachemi-announces-advisory-committee-on-university-renaming\/\">appointed<\/a>. The University Renaming Advisory Committee held community consultation between November and December 2021 in which they had over 23 000 respondents with 2200 unique name suggestions. On March 1, 2022 the Committee issued an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryerson.ca\/news-events\/news\/2022\/03\/update-on-university-renaming-process-and-timeline\/\">update<\/a> on the process and on April 26 President Lachemi announced the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryerson.ca\/news-events\/news\/2022\/04\/a-new-name-for-our-institution\/\">new name<\/a> via Ryerson Today (now Toronto Metropolitan Today).
