{"id":5644,"date":"2016-04-28T17:04:49","date_gmt":"2016-04-28T21:04:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/library.ryerson.ca\/asc\/?p=5644"},"modified":"2020-10-19T08:40:07","modified_gmt":"2020-10-19T12:40:07","slug":"its-preservation-week-do-you-know-where-your-photos-are","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/library.torontomu.ca\/asc\/2016\/04\/its-preservation-week-do-you-know-where-your-photos-are\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s Preservation Week, do you know where your photos are?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ALA&#8217;s Preservation Week.<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/alcts\/preservationweek\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preservation Week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an initiative headed up by the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Library Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to raise awareness around the millions of artifacts in public collections that require special preservation attention. Photographs, films, videos, manuscripts, artworks and digital material can be invaluable cultural objects, containing unique information not found elsewhere. Many of these objects are in danger of becoming damaged or obsolete over time, and require more care than institutions can offer.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What we&#8217;re doing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ryerson Library is doing its part by digitizing photographic and film materials that are degrading, including producing digital scans of the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.ryerson.ca\/index.php\/canadian-architect-magazine-fonds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadian Architect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> photograph collection to make them accessible, and freezing the negatives to stop further damage to the original objects. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.ryerson.ca\/index.php\/documentary-films-series\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Propaganda and documentary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> films from the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/archives.library.ryerson.ca\/index.php\/leniniana-collection\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leniniana collection<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have also been digitized and are now accessible without having to run the fragile films through aging projectors.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you can do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Closer to home, what happens to all those selfies you take? The likelihood is you\u2019re not printing them (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200516085509\/https:\/\/www.techadvisor.co.uk\/feature\/photo-video\/83-of-all-photos-snapped-last-year-remain-in-digital-format-3329308\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some estimate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that over 80% of all photographs taken now remain digital and are never printed out). The speed at which technology changes makes this is a cause for concern. Vint Cerf, Vice President of Google, noted at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science that the loss of our primarily digital culture due to obsolescence may create a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2015\/feb\/13\/google-boss-warns-forgotten-century-email-photos-vint-cerf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cforgotten generation, or even a forgotten century\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are some simple steps you can take at home to protect your personal digital photos, videos and file:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t keep everything: every once in awhile, go through your images and select the most important memories to keep. Do you really need <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> those photos of your cat?<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organize your stuff: use a file organization and file naming system that makes sense to you. This could be chronologically, by subject or a combination of those (ex. by year and then by event).<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make several copies: store your important files in a few different places (on your desktop, on a portable hard-drive, DVD, or on cloud storage), and make sure at least one copy is physically in a different place. Be careful relying solely on third party providers, if a company goes out of business you might be out of luck!<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Save files in common formats: proprietary files such as raw image or specialized software formats are at a higher risk of becoming obsolete.
